St. Andrews Asylum (UK)
The former Norfolk County Asylum had an annex built for more patients in 1876. St. Andrews was a two story ‘H’ shape with male/female wards on each end separated by administration and staff rooms. St Andrews housed the UK’s Primary Care Trust for the NHS before it closing in 1998. Renovation works were to take place but the significant cost of asbestos removal and inefficient build meant all of the building outside of the listed water tower has been demolished creating planning space for a business park.
Full history here
I worked here in the 80s met my husband here and my mother in law worked here too, I worked south and Northside as I was moved from the ward I met my future husband on as we were not allowed to work together, I also ran a builders clean business that did the builders cleans when the new appartments were made which was surreal like walking back in time even found a ward round book with staff and patients names that I remembered, I remember there being a poem found written on the wall during refurbishment , had alot of wonderful memories working here of the patients and staff
